Frequently Asked Questions

Immediate Steps After a Storm

What constitutes "Storm Damage"?
Storm damage includes hail impacts (bruises on shingles), wind lift (creased or missing shingles), lightning strikes, and water intrusion caused by openings created by the storm. It also includes collateral damage to gutters, fences, and siding.
How long do I have to file a claim?
It varies by state and policy, but generally 1-2 years from the Date of Loss. However, waiting increases the chance of denial because the insurer can argue the damage is from "wear and tear" or a later, undocumented event.
Should I call my agent or the 1-800 number?
Call a professional inspector (like us) FIRST. If you call insurance and damage is below your deductible, you file a "zero-pay" claim which stays on your record. We confirm damage exceeds the deductible before you call.
Is temporary housing covered?
If your home is uninhabitable (e.g., roof collapsed, severe water damage), your policy's "ALE" (Additional Living Expenses) coverage will pay for hotels and food.
Can I make temporary repairs myself?
Yes, and you should (e.g., tarping a hole). This is called "mitigating damages." Keep all receipts for tarps and lumber; the insurance company will reimburse you.

Financials & Deductibles

Will my premiums go up if I file?
Generally, no. Storm damage is an "Act of God." Insurers cannot raise rates for an individual due to weather events. However, they can raise rates for an entire zip code if it is a high-risk area, regardless of whether you file.
Can you waive my deductible?
Absolutely not. That is insurance fraud. A reputable company will never offer to "pay" or "waive" your deductible. You are legally required to pay it.
Why is the insurance check made out to my mortgage company too?
The mortgage company owns part of your house. They want to ensure the money is used for repairs, not a vacation. You will need to send the check to them for endorsement.
What is "Recoverable Depreciation"?
Insurers hold back 20-50% of the money until work is done. Example: Roof cost $10k. They pay $6k now (ACV). Once you prove you spent $10k, they send the remaining $4k.
What if the check is less than the repair cost?
This is normal. The first check is an "undisputed offer," not the final price. We file a "Supplement" to bill the insurance company for the difference.

Adjusters & Inspections

What if the adjuster says "No Damage"?
Adjusters are human (and busy). They miss things. If denied, we can demand a "Re-inspection" with a different adjuster or hire a Public Adjuster to fight the denial.
Why does the adjuster's estimate have missing items?
They often write the bare minimum. They might skip "ridge caps" or "starter strips" hoping you won't notice. We audit their scope against building codes.
Do I have to use the insurance company's preferred vendor?
No. You have the "Right to Choose" your contractor. Preferred vendors often work for the insurance company at discounted rates, which can impact quality.
What is a Public Adjuster?
A private licensed professional who works for YOU, not the insurer. They take a small % of the claim increase but often get 30-300% higher settlements.
What is "Colateral Damage"?
Damage to non-roof items like gutters, screens, fences, and mailboxes. These are crucial evidence of storm direction and severity.

The Build & Materials

Can I upgrade my shingles?
Yes! Since you are paying your deductible anyway, many homeowners choose to pay a little extra for Class 4 Impact Resistant shingles, which can lower future premiums.
What if my shingles are discontinued?
If a match cannot be found, "Matching Laws" in many states require the insurer to replace the entire slope or roof to ensure a uniform appearance.
Do you offer warranties?
All our vetted roofing partners provide minimum 5-year workmanship warranties, plus Manufacturer Material Warranties (typically 25-50 years).
How long does roof replacement take?
Usually 1-2 days for an average home. It is loud and messy, but our partners do a thorough magnetic sweep for nails afterwards.
Will you handle the permits?
Yes, our vetted partners handle all city permitting and inspections required by code.
